My paintings speak to the roles people play throughout life. I am interested in how people cling to their common humanity and navigate through life’s passages under the influence of society’s requirements. People, dolls and puppets are my subjects. For me dolls and puppets represent societal archetypes that are common across cultures and time. I am influenced by my training in sociology and psychology and an interest in the Comedia dell’Arte and the art of puppetry. I am drawn to the poignant, the humorous and the edgy.
My use of theatrical settings, scale and the juxtaposition of deep and shallow space further reinforce the illusory quality of societal roles. "All the world 's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts." Shakespeare
